This is the best book on Yogic-style meditation that I have read. Kempton shares her own journey and generalizes the concepts into practical advice for the meditator. There are over 30 examples of how you can apply her practices to your routine. I was "stuck" on one method and Kempton opened my eyes to a variety of different techniques and encouraged experimentation. You will get a lot out of this book. I think it is better for people who already have some experience in meditation. I have been meditating for less than a year, and this book has given some good (and thorough) basics to start on. Each chapter goes through different subjects, techniques, explanations, and experiences and she neatly ties all these aspects together in each chapter. Kempton explains the use of each of the meditations she provides -often called exercises- as well as useful meditation terms to help you find out what it means, how it applies to meditation and also helps with how you are doing during a session. She relates personal and secondhand experiences of different meditations to the exercises she sets out for you in each chapter. She starts with the basics first, such as breathing and relaxing then shows the reader different techniques you can use to deepen meditation and to gently bring your thoughts and focus back into your meditation, as well as techniques to help cope with or dissipate fear, anxiety or "unwanted" thoughts or emotions. Also, Kempton offers a more detailed explanation of Kundalini in the appendix and also offers some troubleshooting tips in the same section in case you have questions or are in need of help. I find that she writes very beautifully, and although I wasn't entirely captivated during the reading, I find she does have a good way of informing the reader about the subject of meditation.I am sure she is bound to capture more readers who are in need of help in meditating, and this book is definitely a good starting point for beginning meditators the know very little about the subject. Just as a side note, although I didn't do many of the exercises, I found that the meditation on "sitting with" your thoughts and remembering them as shakti(energy) really helped me cope with a fear of mine and after maybe 20-30 minutes of doing this I found myself feeling much better and was able to completely make my fear dissapear and go on with my day as if nothing emotionally stressful had happenedto me! I will be sure to keep using this technique when the need arises and maybe do even more of the exercises she outlines in this book.
